Years ago, I got really interested in the topic of anti-aging.  The more I dug into the topic, the more I came to realize that aging is much more than skin deep.  After observing countless faces of all age ranges, I came to understand how much of a role our underlying facial structure plays in how young or old we look.

Not only do well-developed bones keep us looking younger, they also make us appear more attractive.  In society, the people who are deemed to be most beautiful (fashion models) typically have a highly defined facial structure.  If you're like most people, you probably think that a strong facial structure, chiseled jawline, and high cheekbones are solely the result of genetics.

I once thought that way until I learned of a thing called tongue posture.  What is tongue posture? Basically, it's a habit that can literally change the shape and attractiveness of your face.  Best of all, it's free and doesn't require the use of needles or fillers.
A while back, I wrote an article on the topic of ab walking for a stronger core.  That post was inspired by a video I saw on Youtube by a guy named Dr. Mike Mew.  While browsing through his channel, I learned of his world famous mewing method which, if practiced consistently, could help correct facial imbalances.

The mewing method is simple.  It's based on the premise that a proper tongue resting position can correct issues like mouth breathing and a poor bone structure in the face. Ideally, our tongue, when not in use, should rest at the roof of our mouths (against the maxilla bone).  When I observed my habits, I realized that generally, my tongue rested at either the center of my mouth or laid dormant against my lower jaw.

 Could this be the reason for my overbite?

When the maxilla isn't supported by the weight of the tongue, it doesn't develop to its full potential.  And, by correcting our tongue posture, we eventually expand the maxilla to its ideal size/position.  When this occurs, most people will experience visible changes in the way their face looks.  Jawlines are more defined, cheekbones are lifted, the face appears more attractive overall.

When I first tried mewing, I failed miserably at it. As a muscle, my tongue was weak.  I was so used to letting my tongue hang haphazardly that trying to keep it pressed it against the roof of my mouth seemed nearly impossible.

So I gave up.

Weeks later I came across some more before an after pictures of people who changed their entire face from mewing and I got motivated to try again.  I've been mewing for a short period of time but I feel like I'm already seeing changes in the appearance of my face.  A while back, I noticed that my face wasn't as symmetrical as I would like.  One side was ok, but the other side dropped and looked unattractive.   I may be imagining things but I feel like my face is looking more symmetrical than before.  It's far from perfect, but I'm noticing a slight change.

  Actually, I think the changes I might be seeing might not be from the expansion of my maxilla bone (yet), I think it's happened as a result of the tightening my facial muscles as I try to keep my tongue in proper position.  Nowadays, I no longer let my face slack. I try to keep it in a toned position kinda like how someone pulls their abdominal muscles in to work on their inner core.  When models pose for the camera, they smize and create tension in their face.  I feel like I'm doing that every time I remember to mew and I feel like my efforts are paying off.   Don't take my word for it, take a moment and search mewing before and after online and you'll come across pics like these.

Mewing has some other benefits associated it with like better breathing.  In my experience, mewing seems to keep me conscious of how I maintain my body while at rest.  I notice myself pulling my shoulders back, standing up straighter and maintaining a better posture overall.  The younger you are, the better the results you'll experience from mewing.  But even if you're a little older (like me) remember that our bones are constantly evolving.  The more pressure we place on our main facial bone, the more it will expand, creating a more balanced face.
