A Republican who has praised strong border controls and admires Winston Churchill was yesterday named France's Prime Minister.

Centre-Right politician Edouard Philippe, 46, will serve Emmanuel Macron, 39, as his deputy after Mr Macron was elected President earlier this month.

The appointment has been regarded as a bid to broaden the appeal of the President's political movement, En Marche (on the move), ahead of the country's parliamentary elections next month.

The choice by Mr Macron – a former socialist minister – illustrated his commitment to break down the left-right divide which has dominated French politics for decades.

It is the first time in modern French political history that a president has appointed a prime minister from outside his camp without being forced to by a defeat in parliamentary elections.
