Lok Sabha Passes '' Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016 ''

The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was passed in the Lok Sabha. 

The Bill had already been passed by the Rajya Sabha during the Winter Session. 

It entitles the women working in the organised sector to paid maternity leave of 26 weeks, up from 12 weeks.

Highlights of The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016:

# The Bill will protect the employment of women during the time of pregnancy

# It will entitles them to full paid absence from work to take care of her child

# Women working in the organised sector will be entitled to paid maternity leave of 26 weeks (up from 12 weeks) up to two surviving children in order to allow the mother to take care her child during her most formative stage

# The maternity leave beyond the first two children will continue to be 12 weeks. The new law will apply to all establishments employing 10 or more people

# The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016 will also makes it mandatory for employers in establishments with 30 women or 50 employees (whichever is less), to provide crèche facilities either in office or in other place within a 500-metre radius

# The Bill will allow employers to permit a woman employee to work from home. In case of crèche, mothers will be allowed to attend her child four times a day

# Considering number of cases of adaptation or women opting surrogate to bear a child, the Bill extends a 12-week maternity leave for commissioning mothers (biological mother)

# Biological Mother is one whose egg is used to create an embryo planted in surrogate's womb. In such cases, the maternity leave will be calculated from the date the child is handed over to the commissioning or adoptive mother
