Whether it’s the Cauvery, the Krishna or, more recently, the Mahadayi, Karnataka has either gone through tribunals and courts for decades over sharing the waters of the rivers running through its territory or has been faulted for building dams, planning projects and impeding water flow to other states.

While water shortages and the need for drinking water and widening the area under irrigation are real concerns for Karnataka, the issues have been largely politicised and have become a feeding trough for political parties in the basin regions, depending on which party is ruling and which is not in the respective states and the Centre.

Karnataka is neither a victim nor a villain. There is an Inter-State River Water Disputes Act and if that is followed and matters are argued correctly before tribunals, there should not be any dispute with any state at all

In the Cauvery River Water Dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, TN has demanded its share awarded by Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal and the Supreme Court of India(SCI)directed Karnataka several times to release water

However,Karnatak argues that there is now sufficient water to meet its own requirements and dis not comply with SCI's direction to release water inviting censure

Karnataka, arguing that there isn’t sufficient water to meet its own requirements, did not implement two of the Supreme Court’s orders, inviting censure.

The issue turned into a battle between the ruling Congress in Karnataka and the principal opposition BJP, ruling at the Centre, which initially refused to intervene in the matter.
