Sydney suffered through its hottest day ever with temperatures reaching 47C in the outer suburbs and smashing all-time heat records across the city, while 53 bushfires burned all over NSW.

Penrith was the hottest part of the metro area, hitting 47C and smashing its previous record of 45C, while Richmond in the northwest also reached 47C - a staggering four degrees hotter than its 2004 record of 43C.

Numerous other Western Sydney suburbs, and some in the Blue Mountains, shattered either February or all-time records as maximums hit levels up to 11C higher than the CBD which only reached 36C.

Thousands flocked to the world-famous Bondi Beach where temperatures reached a comparatively mild 35C, and was still packed well into the evening past 7pm as the weather stayed at 34C.
