 1     Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova :

            She is the first woman to have flown in space, having been selected from more than four            hundred  applicants and five finalists to pilot Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963. She                           completed 48 orbits of the Earth in her three days in space.
  • Before her recruitment as a cosmonaut, Tereshkova was a textile-factory assembly worker and an amateur skydiver. After the dissolution of the first group of female cosmonauts in 1969, she became a prominent member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, holding various political offices. She remained politically active following the collapse of the Soviet Union and is still regarded as a hero in post-Soviet Russia. 
  • In 2013, she offered to go on a one-way trip to Mars if the opportunity arose. At the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics, she was a carrier of the Olympic flag. 
  • After the flight of Yuri Gagarin in 1961, Sergey Korolyov, the chief Soviet rocket engineer, came up with the idea of putting a woman in space. On 16 February 1962, Valentina Tereshkova was selected to join the female cosmonaut corps. Out of more than four hundred applicants, five were selected: Tatyana KuznetsovaIrina SolovyovaZhanna YorkinaValentina Ponomaryova, and Tereshkova. Qualifications included that they be parachutists under 30 years of age, under 170 cm (5 feet 7 inches) tall, and under 70 kg (154 lbs.) in weight.

   2    Svetlana Yevgenyevna Savitskaya 
         Born : August 8 1948 (Age 68)
         Moscow, Soviet Union

  • retired Soviet aviator and cosmonaut who flew aboard Soyuz T-7 in 1982, becoming the second woman in space. On her 1984 mission she became the first woman to fly to space twice, and the first woman to perform a spacewalk.
  • She won first place at the 6th FAI World Aerobatic Championship in 1970. She started training as a cosmonaut in 1980.
  • Daughter of Soviet military commander Yevgeniy Savitskiy, Svetlana started her aerospace career as a test and sports pilot. Starting from 1974 she set 18 international world records on MiG aircraft and three records in team parachute jumping. She won first place at the 6th FAI World Aerobatic Championship in 1970. She started training as a cosmonaut in 1980.

  • She resigned from NASA in 1993 to found a company researching the application of technology to daily life.
  • She has appeared on television several times, including as an actress in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
  • The family moved to ChicagoIllinois, when Jemison was three years old, to take advantage of the better educational and employment opportunities there. Jemison says that as a young girl growing up in Chicago she always assumed she would get into space. 
  • After completing her medical training, Jemison joined the staff of the Peace Corps and served as a Peace Corps Medical Officer from 1983 to 1985 responsible for the health of Peace Corps Volunteers serving in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
  • After the flight of Sally Ride in 1983, Jemison felt the astronaut program had opened up, so she applied.Jemison's inspiration for joining NASA was African-American actress Nichelle Nichols
  • Jemison resigned from NASA in March 1993."I left NASA because I'm very interested in how social sciences interact with technologies," Jemison said. "People always think of technology as something having silicon in it. But a pencil is technology. 
  • In the spring of 1996, Jemison filed a complaint against a Texas police officer, accusing him of police brutality during a traffic stop that ended in her arrest. She was pulled over by Nassau Bay, Texas officer Henry Hughes for allegedly making an illegal U-turn and arrested after Hughes learned of a warrant on Jemison for a speeding charge. In her complaint, Jemison said the officer physically and emotionally mistreated her.
